Chapter 4 - The Remote Lockout

|

The moment I hung up with Daniel, I tapped my screen to place a second call. This time, I dialed the direct line of the general manager at the high-end Mercedes dealership down town.

The call connected on the second ring.

“Ms. Bennett!” the manager answered warmly. “Is everything alright with the new vehicle?”

“Marcus, I need you to perform an emergency remote service action on my vehicle right now,” I said, walking toward the hotel doorway where the valet stand was located. “My vehicle is currently parked in the valet circle at the Grand Plaza Hotel.”

“Is there a mechanical issue?”

“No,” I replied evenly. “An unauthorized person took my spare key without my knowledge or consent. The vehicle title, registration, insurance, financing agreement, and digital account are strictly in my name, correct?”

“Yes, ma'am. You are the sole legal owner on every piece of documentation.”

“I am reporting that spare key as unauthorized. I need you to access the telematics system and issue an immediate remote key revocation and engine immobilizer command.”

“Understood, Ms. Bennett,” Marcus said, his tone instantly shifting to strict professional precision. “I am logging into the corporate portal now. Verifying VIN... and executing the remote immobilizer lock. The spare key in their possession is now a useless piece of plastic.”

“Thank you, Marcus.”

I ended the call and slipped my phone back into my purse.

Through the doorway, I could see Madison, Trevor, and my parents leading a small group of guests toward the outdoor foyer to admire 'her' new car.

They thought they had won. They thought that by humiliating me publicly, they had forced my hand into silence.

They had no idea that while they were parading around, the ground beneath their feet was cracking wide open. I smoothed down my coat, turned around, and walked right back into the hotel.
