Chapter 12 - Family Secrets Exposed

|
Word of the default spread through our extended family like wildfire over the next seventy-two hours.
For years, Dad had maintained an image as the wealthy, generous patriarch who helped everyone. He had borrowed smaller sums—five thousand here, ten thousand there—from uncles, aunts, and cousins, claiming he was simply managing short-term cash flow for massive government construction contracts.
On Wednesday afternoon, Daniel Shaw sent a formal notice to all secondary creditors associated with Mercer Construction, outlining the bank’s primary asset liens.
Suddenly, the relatives realized the truth: Dad was bankrupt, and their personal loans to him were completely unsecured.
My phone blew up with frantic calls from Aunt Sarah and Uncle Bob.
“Claire!” Aunt Sarah cried over the phone. “Is it true? Your father told us he was investing our twenty thousand dollars into a high-yield construction fund!”
“He spent it on Madison’s wedding and Trevor’s lease deposit, Aunt Sarah,” I said calmly. “I’m sorry. You need to hire your own attorney immediately.”
By Wednesday evening, the family group chat exploded with rage. The same relatives who had spent years praising Dad and calling me 'cold and distant' were now hurling accusations at him.
Mom tried to send out a group email pleading for family unity:
Please, everyone, Richard is working tirelessly to fix this! Claire has turned against us and pushed the bank to ruin her own father! We need to stick together!
Uncle Bob replied within three minutes:

Stop lying, Susan! Richard stole my retirement savings to pay for Madison’s ice sculptures! Don't you dare contact us again!
The calls asking Dad for explanations were relentless. The invitations to family dinners vanished overnight. The grand facade of the Mercer family had not just cracked—it had been completely reduced to ash.
