Chapter 26 - The Anniversary Dinner

|

To celebrate the successful launch of the Dayton center and the tentative peace that had settled over our lives, I hosted a large family dinner at my house. It was a chaotic, joyful gathering. Allison was there, laughing as she helped me prepare the salad. Rebecca sat at the kitchen island, debating local politics with Lily. Even Chloe had reluctantly agreed to come, sitting in the corner of the living room while Noah enthusiastically showed her his new toy dinosaur.

As we all sat down around the large dining table, the sheer magnitude of what we had survived and built hit me with profound force.

I raised my glass of sparkling cider.

"I want to propose a toast," I announced, waiting for the chatter to quiet down.

Everyone turned to look at me. Lily smiled, reaching out to rest her hand on mine.

"Ten years ago, the concept of family felt like a very dangerous word," I began, looking around the table at the incredibly diverse group of people I loved fiercely. "We were all broken by different circumstances, carrying secrets and fighting completely isolated battles. But we learned that family isn't defined by bloodlines or flawless histories. Family is defined by the people who refuse to leave the room when the truth gets ugly."

Allison wiped a tear from her eye, nodding silently.

"We have built something completely beautiful out of the absolute worst days of our lives," I continued, raising my glass higher. "To the home we created, the children we protect, and the legacy that will outlast us all. To our family."

"To family," the entire table echoed in unison.

We spent the rest of the evening eating, laughing loudly, and sharing stories. The ghosts of Daniel, Marcus, and the trauma we had endured were not erased, but they no longer controlled the narrative. They were simply chapters in a book that we were finally writing on our own terms.
