Chapter 24 - Boundaries and Breakthroughs

Chloe’s presence in the house was incredibly disruptive. She skipped her counseling sessions, refused to interact with the younger children, and spent hours playing loud music in her room. She was actively trying to get kicked out, testing the boundaries to see exactly when we would finally abandon her, just as she assumed everyone eventually would.
The breaking point occurred on a Friday afternoon. Noah was sitting at the kitchen table, carefully constructing a massive tower out of wooden blocks. Chloe walked past, deliberately brushing her hip against the table and sending the entire structure crashing to the floor.
Noah gasped, his eyes filling with immediate tears.
"Watch where you're building, kid," Chloe snapped maliciously.
Lily was in the kitchen instantly. She didn't yell, but the sudden, cold authority in her posture made the entire room freeze.
"Pick them up," Lily ordered, staring directly into Chloe’s defiant eyes.
"I didn't do it on purpose," Chloe sneered. "And I don't take orders from you."
"You are hurting in ways that nobody can fix right now, Chloe," Lily said, her voice dropping to a low, dangerous calm. "I know exactly how much that burns. But your pain does not give you permission to traumatize a seven-year-old boy who has lost just as much as you have. Pick up the blocks."
Chloe stared at Lily, her jaw clenched, waiting for the inevitable threat of eviction. But Lily just stood there, immovable, holding her accountable without threatening to send her away.
Slowly, the anger in Chloe’s eyes fractured, replaced by a sudden, overwhelming exhaustion. Her shoulders slumped. She dropped to her knees and began silently picking up the wooden blocks, handing them back to Noah one by one.

"I'm sorry," Chloe whispered, a single tear escaping her heavy eyeliner.
"I know," Lily said softly, kneeling beside her and helping her gather the pieces. "It takes a lot of energy to be angry all the time. You are allowed to rest here."
