Chapter 23 - The Teenage Storm

|

The Dayton center officially opened in early spring. It was a beautiful, sprawling sanctuary, funded by the community and entirely inspired by the architectural concepts Lily had found in her father’s portfolio. The first few weeks were a chaotic blur of new admissions, finalizing volunteer schedules, and establishing routines.

On a rainy Tuesday evening, a social worker arrived with our newest resident. Her name was Chloe. She was fifteen years old, wearing heavily ripped jeans, a leather jacket, and an expression of pure, unadulterated hostility. Her father had passed away from a sudden heart attack two days prior, and her mother had been out of the picture for a decade.

"I am not staying in this pathetic charity house," Chloe announced loudly, dropping her duffel bag onto the hardwood floor of the entryway. She glared at me, crossing her arms defensively. "You can call child services back. I'll sleep on the street."

"The street is cold, and we have fresh lasagna in the oven," I replied calmly, entirely unfazed by her posturing. "You are welcome to leave in the morning, but you are eating dinner here tonight."

Chloe scoffed, rolling her eyes aggressively, but she didn't reach for her bag.

Lily walked down the stairs, pausing when she saw the teenager. She immediately recognized the defensive armor Chloe was wearing. It was the exact same armor Lily had worn the night I first found her in my guest bedroom.

"The corner room on the second floor is yours," Lily told her, bypassing the introductions entirely. "It has the best Wi-Fi signal, and nobody will bother you. My name is Lily. If you want to yell at someone, I'll be in the office."

Chloe looked at Lily, slightly disarmed by the lack of pity or authority in her voice.

"I don't need your help," Chloe muttered, grabbing her bag.

"Good," Lily said smoothly. "Because we don't offer help to people who don't want it. We just offer a bed."

Chloe marched up the stairs without another word. The storm had arrived, but Lily was an absolute expert at navigating the rain.
