Chapter 20 - The Grandfather's Gift

Marcus did not pass away that night, but the doctors warned us that his body was rapidly shutting down. On our third morning in the hospital, while I went down to the cafeteria to fetch fresh coffee, Marcus called Lily closer to his bedside.
When I returned, Lily was holding a small, incredibly tarnished silver key in the palm of her hand. She looked completely stunned.
"What is that?" I asked, setting the coffee cups on the side table.
"It belongs to a safety deposit box at the downtown bank," Marcus explained, his breathing incredibly shallow and labored. "I opened it thirty years ago. I haven't touched it since the week Daniel was arrested."
"What is inside?" Lily asked, tracing the ridges of the old key.
"Daniel’s architectural portfolio," Marcus whispered, a solitary tear escaping his closed eye. "His original drawings. The blueprints for the houses he dreamed of building before everything went wrong. The police tried to seize everything in his apartment as evidence. I managed to clear out his drafting table before they arrived."
Lily stared at the key, completely overwhelmed by the magnitude of the gift. It was a piece of her father’s pure, untainted ambition, preserved perfectly in the dark for over a decade.
"I wanted to give it to you when you graduated," Marcus coughed violently, his chest heaving with the effort. "But I think you need it now. Use his blueprints, Lily. Build the houses he couldn't."
"I will," Lily promised, leaning down and pressing her forehead gently against his cheek. "I swear to you, I will."

Marcus smiled, a look of absolute, transcendent peace washing over his weathered face. He took one final, shuddering breath, and the heavy tension in the room instantly evaporated. The heart monitor let out a long, continuous tone, signaling the end of his long, weary journey.
Lily didn't scream or collapse. She simply closed her eyes, clutching the silver key tightly against her chest, and kissed her grandfather goodbye.
