Chapter 21 - The Final Rest

The funeral for Marcus was small, quiet, and deeply dignified. We held a graveside service under a pale, overcast sky, surrounded by the few remaining friends who had stood by his side during the horrific fallout of Daniel’s trial. Allison attended, standing respectfully in the back row, offering silent support. Rebecca stood beside me, her expression solemn.
Lily stood at the head of the casket, wrapped in a heavy black coat, holding a single white rose. She did not look like a broken child; she looked like the formidable, unshakeable head of a family legacy.
The local minister offered a brief prayer, speaking of Marcus’s resilience and his dedication to his community. When he finished, he stepped back, offering the space to anyone who wished to speak.
Lily stepped forward, her boots crunching softly on the frozen grass.
"My grandfather was a man who understood the profound cost of loyalty," Lily began, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet cemetery. "When the world decided that my father was nothing more than a monster, Marcus refused to abandon him. He endured the whispers, the isolation, and the absolute destruction of his own reputation because he believed that family is not something you abandon when it becomes inconvenient."
She looked down at the polished wood of the casket.
"He taught me that you cannot control the tragedies that strike your life, but you can control the dignity with which you survive them. He kept my father’s memory alive when everyone else tried to bury it. And he loved me enough to let me build my own future."
Lily knelt down and placed the white rose gently on the casket.

"Rest well, Grandpa," she whispered. "Tell Dad we are doing okay."
She stood up and walked back to my side, slipping her hand comfortably into mine. We watched as the groundskeepers prepared to lower the casket, saying a final goodbye to the man who had anchored our family through the most terrifying storms of our lives.
