Chapter 8 - The Interrupted Assault

Caleb released my bruised arm only long enough to step aggressively forward, preparing to grab me by the shoulders and physically drag me upright.
The medical alarm next to my bed grew deafening, an incessant scream demanding immediate attention.
Before Caleb’s hands could make contact with my shoulders again, the heavy wooden hospital room door slowly began to open wider.
For a single moment, Caleb stopped. The terrifying anger on his face completely disappeared, replaced by something I had never, ever seen from him before in all our years together.
Genuine fear.
A seasoned floor nurse stood firmly in the doorway. Right beside her was Dr. Harrison, the no-nonsense trauma surgeon who had been carefully treating me since the night of the accident.
And standing directly behind them, taking up almost the entire doorframe, was a large hospital security officer. He was holding a digital tablet and wearing a deeply serious, uncompromising expression.
"Mr. Caleb Carter," Dr. Harrison said calmly, though his voice carried the sharp, dangerous edge of a scalpel. "Step away from the patient right this second."
Caleb dropped his hands immediately, stumbling backward until his back hit the cold wall near the window.
"I... I was just helping my wife get ready to leave," Caleb stammered quickly, his professional facade crumbling as he tried to put on a charming, cooperative smile. "We were just having a small misunderstanding about her discharge date."

But nobody in the doorway moved an inch. The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.
The nurse stepped inside, her sharp eyes immediately locking onto my upper arm, where Caleb’s cruel fingers had already left dark, angry red marks against my pale skin.
