Chapter 10 - Eyes Everywhere

The tall security officer stepped into the room, holding the digital tablet up for Caleb to see.
"Mr. Carter," the officer said, his voice deep and completely devoid of sympathy. "Visitor logs, room entry records, and nursing reports have all been thoroughly reviewed in the last three minutes."
Caleb’s eyes widened in sheer panic. He looked around the ceiling of my room frantically.
"You recorded me?" Caleb demanded, his voice rising in false, panicked outrage. "That is a massive violation of privacy! I will sue this entire hospital! I'm calling my lawyer right now!"
"No one recorded the inside of this room," the nurse answered smoothly, adjusting my blankets. "But the hallway security camera is equipped with audio monitoring for emergency situations. It clearly recorded your shouting, your threats, and the physical struggle when we responded to the patient distress alarm."
My hands began to tremble wildly beneath the hospital blanket. But this time, it wasn't from fear. It wasn't from the pain in my ribs or the aching in my legs.
It was from the overwhelming, staggering realization that someone had finally seen it. The medical staff had seen the monster I had spent eleven years trying to hide from the world.

Caleb opened his mouth to argue, but no words came out. His ultimate weapon—the isolation and secrecy of our marital home—had been completely stripped away from him in a bright, sterile hospital ward.
"Sir, you are going to leave this premises immediately," the security officer commanded, pointing toward the open door. "If you refuse, I will have the local police physically remove you and press assault charges on behalf of the hospital."
