Chapter 11 - The Escort

|

Caleb looked at me, his eyes practically begging me to intervene, to save him from this massive public humiliation. He expected me to revert to my old programming, to apologize to the doctor and beg them not to kick my husband out.

I looked right back at him, my face completely blank, and didn't say a single word.

Realizing he had completely lost his grip on me, Caleb let out a furious, pathetic scoff. He snatched his expensive suit jacket off the visitor’s chair and stomped toward the door.

"You're going to regret this, Rebecca," he spat over his shoulder. "You have no money. You have no job. You are absolutely nothing without me."

The security officer placed a heavy hand firmly on Caleb’s shoulder, guiding him aggressively out into the hallway and down toward the elevator banks.

Once his footsteps faded away, the hospital room suddenly felt completely different.

The oppressive, suffocating weight that had entered the room with him was entirely gone. It was quiet. It was peaceful.

Most importantly, it felt completely safe.

Dr. Harrison turned to me, his stern expression softening slightly. "Are you okay, Rebecca?"

I took a slow, deep breath. For the first time since the horrific accident, I could inhale fully without worrying about someone becoming angry at my pain.

"Yes," I whispered, wiping a single, stray tear from my cheek. "For the first time in a long time, I think I'm going to be okay."

The doctor nodded. "We are putting a permanent ban on his visitor privileges. He will not get past the front desk again."

I closed my eyes and finally let myself rest.
