Chapter 5 - Echoes of a Broken Marriage

|
Lying trapped in that bed, staring at the angry man hovering over me, eleven years of marital history suddenly flashed before my eyes like a suffocating movie.
After Emma was born, I had a thriving career as a senior accountant. I loved my job. I loved the independence it gave me. But Caleb had relentlessly insisted that a "proper" family required one parent to stay home full-time. He guilt-tripped me for months, claiming my ambition was harming our infant daughter. So, I folded. I left my career, handed him complete control of our finances, and spent years managing the house.
I cared for our daughter. I cooked the meals. I kept the house immaculate. And I spent over a decade believing that keeping the peace meant quietly swallowing my own pride to protect our family from his unpredictable temper.
Whenever he had a bad day at work, it was my fault the house was too loud. Whenever money was tight, it was my fault for spending too much on groceries. I had apologized for things I didn't do. I had shrunk myself down until I was nothing more than a shadow living in my own home, all because I was terrified of what a fractured marriage might do to Emma.
"I gave up everything for this family," I whispered, the raw truth finally breaking past my lips. "I gave up my career. I gave up my life. You’re my husband. You’re supposed to protect me. You're supposed to help me."
Caleb looked down at me without a single ounce of warmth or empathy in his dark eyes.

"You’re just making everything harder," he scoffed. "As usual."
The heart monitor kept beeping, a steady rhythm that suddenly felt like a countdown to something irreversible.
