Chapter 17 - Rebuilding the Foundation

|

Months later, my physical recovery progressed remarkably well. The heavy leg braces were downgraded to a sleek cane, and the sharp pain in my ribs faded to a dull, manageable ache.

But physical healing was only half the battle. I had to completely rebuild my life from scratch.

I reached out to my old accounting firm. To my immense surprise, my former boss remembered my stellar work ethic and offered me a junior position to help me get back on my feet.

The first day I walked back into an office, wearing a professional suit and carrying my own briefcase, I felt an overwhelming wave of imposter syndrome. I had spent eleven years being told I was useless. I was terrified I had forgotten how to do my job.

But as I sat down at my desk and opened the financial spreadsheets, the numbers clicked perfectly into place. My brain hadn't forgotten anything. Slowly, one day at a time, I rebuilt my career. I earned my first independent paycheck. I signed a lease on a beautiful, sunlit apartment for Emma and me.

We didn't have much furniture at first, and we ate pizza on the floor for a week. But when Emma laughed, the sound echoed through the rooms freely, completely unbothered by the fear of waking an angry father.

I was standing on my own two feet, both physically and financially.
