Chapter 12 - The Social Worker's Question

|
The very next morning, the bright Virginia sunlight poured through the hospital blinds. I was eating a quiet breakfast when a soft knock echoed on the door. A hospital social worker named Sarah walked in, carrying a clipboard and a warm, empathetic smile.
She sat in the chair Caleb had abandoned the day before. She didn't press me for graphic details. She didn't judge me for staying with an abusive man for eleven years. She simply listened as I poured out my heart, explaining the financial control, the emotional manipulation, and the constant fear.
"I just wanted to keep my family together," I cried softly. "I didn't want Emma to come from a broken home."
Sarah listened patiently until I finished. She didn’t offer unsolicited advice or tell me what legal decisions I needed to make. She simply looked at me and asked one profound, life-altering question.
"Rebecca," Sarah began gently, leaning forward. "If your daughter Emma was lying in this hospital bed right now, and her husband came in and treated her the exact way Caleb treated you yesterday... would you tell her to accept it?"
I stopped crying instantly. I looked across the room at the chaotic crayon drawing securely taped to the wall.
COME HOME SOON, MOMMY.
The very thought of a man raising his voice at my sweet, innocent daughter, let alone physically grabbing her while she was injured, made my blood run entirely cold. A fierce, maternal rage ignited deep inside my chest.
Tears filled my eyes again, but they were tears of absolute clarity.

"No," I whispered fiercely. "I would kill him."
Sarah nodded slowly. "Then why should you accept it?"
