Chapter 6 - The Shadow at the Gate

|
The morning sun barely broke through the heavy grey clouds surrounding the Vance estate when the loud screeching of tires echoed down the long iron driveway. Three black luxury SUVs pulled up to the security gates, blocking the main entrance.
Elena stood by the tall arched window in baby Leo’s nursery, watching through the sheer curtains as a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out of the lead vehicle. He was accompanied by two intimidating men in dark sunglasses and a sharp-looking woman holding a thick leather briefcase.
It was Julian Carter—Victoria’s ruthless father and the head of Carter Global Logistics.
Inside the estate foyer, Marcus was already waiting near the massive mahogany double doors, his hands resting calmly inside his blazer pockets. Beside him stood his chief head of security, David, a retired military veteran.
"Mr. Vance," David whispered, adjusting his earpiece. "Julian Carter is demanding an immediate audience. He claims he has a court injunction granting him access to his grandson."
"Let him in through the pedestrian gate alone," Marcus ordered, his voice cold and unwavering. "His security detail stays outside."
Moments later, the heavy brass doors opened. Julian Carter marched into the grand foyer, his polished boots striking the marble floor with aggressive force. His eyes burned with controlled fury as he stopped ten paces away from Marcus.
"Where is my daughter, Marcus?" Julian demanded, his raspy voice echoing off the high ceilings. "And where is my grandson?"
"Victoria is currently sitting in a holding cell at the central police precinct," Marcus replied without a single hint of emotion. "She was arrested for bank fraud, attempted embezzlement, and child endangerment."
Julian let out a bitter, mocking laugh, raising a gold-ringed finger at Marcus.
"You think you can destroy my family name over a minor domestic dispute?" Julian sneered. "Victoria was stressed. She made a mistake. But you had her dragged out of here in handcuffs like a common criminal!"
"She tried to assault the woman holding my son, Julian," Marcus stepped forward, his eyes locking onto the older man. "She threatened to drain my child’s trust fund to cover your illegal corporate debts."
Julian’s face twisted in rage. "That trust fund was part of our merger agreement! You owe my firm four million dollars!"
"I owe you nothing," Marcus stated firmly. "Your daughter is going to prison, Julian. And if you step onto this property again without a police escort, I will have you arrested for criminal trespassing."

Julian took a slow step back, his eyes darting toward the grand staircase above, where he caught a brief glimpse of Elena watching from the landing.
"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Marcus," Julian whispered dangerously. "You chose a cheap maid over my bloodline. I will make sure you lose everything you hold dear—starting with this estate."
