Chapter 14 - The Echoes of the Past

Late that evening, after the police had led Arthur away in handcuffs, the mansion returned to a quiet, subdued calm.
Elena sat in the library, sipping hot water while Marcus sat at his mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of old yellowed corporate folders that his private investigators had delivered earlier that afternoon.
"Elena," Marcus called out softly. "Come here for a moment."
Elena walked over to the desk. "Yes, Mr. Vance?"
Marcus laid a black-and-white photograph flat on the desk. It showed two young men in business suits standing together in front of a grand office building thirty years ago. One was Marcus’s late father, Arthur Vance Sr. The other was a handsome man with warm, familiar eyes.
Elena gasped as her breath caught in her throat. "That's... that's my father! Gabriel Flores!"
"I know," Marcus said softly, looking up at her with deep respect. "My investigator uncovered your family's real history today, Elena."
"My father passed away ten years ago," Elena murmured, her eyes misting with tears. "He was an accountant. He lost his firm after a bad business partnership..."
"It wasn't a bad partnership, Elena," Marcus corrected gently. "It was Julian Carter."
Elena looked at him in shock. "What?"
"Thirty years ago, your father was the chief auditor for Vance Enterprises," Marcus explained, pointing to the documents. "He discovered that Julian Carter was running a massive money-laundering scheme through shell companies in South America. Before your father could present the audit to the board, Julian framed him for embezzlement, destroyed his reputation, and forced him into bankruptcy."

Elena’s hands shook as she touched the photograph of her father. "My father spent the rest of his life working low-wage jobs, struggling to pay for my sister's medical care... he was innocent all along?"
"He was an honest man who was ruined by a monster," Marcus said firmly, taking Elena's hand into his own. "Your father protected my family's legacy thirty years ago. And now, you are protecting my son. The Flores family owes nothing to the Carters. It is time Julian paid for what he did to your father."
