Chapter 16 - Blackout in the Study

"Leo isn't at this gala, Victoria," Marcus stated coldly, his voice slicing through the tense ballroom air. "He is safe at home under armed security."
"Then we will go to the estate right now!" Victoria declared dramatically, turning toward the news cameras. "The press will see a mother reunited with her baby!"
"You aren't going anywhere near my estate," Marcus replied, pulling his phone from his pocket. "Because your injunction was fraudulent."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"The appellate judge who signed your injunction, Judge Higgins, was arrested twenty minutes ago by federal agents," Marcus revealed, turning his phone screen to show a breaking news broadcast. "He was caught accepting a five-hundred-thousand-dollar bribe from a Carter Global offshore account."
Julian’s face turned gray as the crowd erupted into shocked gasps.
Before Julian could respond, the lights inside the grand ballroom suddenly flickered violently and plunged into complete, pitch-black darkness.
"What's happening?!" women screamed in panic.
"Elena, stay close to me!" Marcus called out, reaching for her hand in the dark.
In the confusion, a heavy hand grabbed Elena’s arm, yanking her violently away from Marcus.
"Let go of me!" Elena cried out, struggling against her captor.

A cold, sharp metal object pressed firmly against her side.
"Keep your mouth shut if you want to live, maid," a rough voice whispered into her ear. "You're coming with us."
