Chapter 25 - The Red Laser Dot

|
Elena ran through the dark, echoing hallways of the mansion, clutching eleven-month-old Leo securely against her chest. Behind her, the heavy sound of gunfire and shattering glass echoed from the ground floor as Marcus and his remaining guards fought off the mysterious invaders.
She reached the master suite, tapped the emergency code into the wall panel, and stepped inside the reinforced steel panic room. The heavy blast door slid shut, locking automatically with a deep pneumatic hiss.
Inside, green emergency lights illuminated the room. Safe monitors displayed live feeds from the remaining perimeter cameras.
Elena sat on the leather bench, holding Leo close, her heart pounding like a trapped bird.
"We're safe in here, baby," she whispered, kissing Leo's soft hair. "Your daddy will be here soon."
Suddenly, the central monitoring screen in the panic room flickered. The live camera feeds vanished, replaced by a dark, shadowy figure sitting inside a high-tech office overlooking a distant skyline.
A distorted, cold voice spoke through the room's speakers:
"Good evening, Miss Flores... or should I say, the future Mrs. Vance?"
Elena stood up, her blood turning to ice. "Who are you?!"
"I am the founder of Apex," the cold voice answered with a subtle laugh. "Julian and Victoria were merely small pawns in a much larger game. You fought bravely for that child... but you do not know the real secret behind Leo’s bloodline."
"What are you talking about?!" Elena demanded, holding the baby tighter.
"Did Marcus ever tell you why Victoria was so desperate to claim that baby?" the voice whispered. "Did he ever tell you who Leo’s biological mother really was before Victoria paid for the embryo transfer?"
Elena gasped, stepping back as her breath caught in her throat.
Before she could process the terrifying words, a tiny, glowing red laser dot glided slowly across the reinforced bulletproof glass of the panic room window... resting precisely over the center of little Leo’s chest.

Outside the door, a heavy metallic drilling sound began to cut through the steel lock.
Elena held the child close to her heart, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at the glowing red dot on the glass, realizing that the ultimate battle for the child's life had only just begun...
