Chapter 19 - The Father's Legacy

|

The following morning, inside a secure hotel suite where Marcus had relocated his family, Elena sat beside a small antique wooden box that her father had left her before he died.

She had carried the key on her necklace for ten years, never knowing what it opened until Marcus’s investigator handed her the box from her old family storage unit.

Elena inserted the small silver key and turned the lock.

Inside lay a black leather notebook filled with her father’s neat handwriting, alongside a encrypted USB memory stick marked with the Vance corporate seal.

Marcus walked into the room, holding two cups of coffee. "What did you find, Elena?"

"My father's diary," Elena whispered, her eyes shining with tears. "He recorded every single conversation he had with Julian Carter back in 1996."

Marcus sat beside her, plugging the USB drive into his laptop.

A series of audio files opened on the screen. Marcus clicked the first file.

A raspy, arrogant voice echoed from the speakers—it was a young Julian Carter:

"Listen to me, Gabriel. If you don't alter those audit figures for Vance Enterprises, I will make sure your daughter never walks again. I own the banks, I own the police, and I will burn your life to the ground."

Elena covered her mouth as tears streamed down her cheeks. "He threatened my life... that's why my father stayed silent and took the blame..."

Marcus’s eyes burned with fierce determination. "Your father saved your life, Elena. And this recording is the final nail in Julian Carter’s coffin."
