Chapter 23 - A Promise of Protection

Elena looked at Marcus, concern showing in her dark eyes. "Then we are still in danger?"
Marcus looked down at little Leo, who was giggling as he reached for the white roses.
"I won't let anyone hurt my son," Marcus said firmly. "Or you, Elena."
He took both of her hands in his, looking directly into her eyes with intense sincerity.
"Elena, you came into this house as a maid," Marcus murmured softly. "But you became the shield that saved my family. You gave my son the love his own mother denied him... and you brought light back into my life when I thought I could never trust anyone again."
Elena’s heart beat fast in her chest. "Marcus..."
"I don't want you to be my employee anymore, Elena," Marcus said, pulling a small black velvet box from his pocket. He popped the latch open, revealing a breathtaking sapphire ring surrounded by delicate diamonds. "I want you to stay by my side as my equal. As my partner. As Leo's mother."
Tears of joy welled in Elena's eyes. "Marcus... are you asking me..."
"Elena Flores, will you marry me?" Marcus asked softly.

Elena threw her arms around his neck, kissing him deeply as tears of happiness spilled over her cheeks. "Yes! Yes, Marcus! A thousand times yes!"
In the courtyard, little Leo clapped his tiny hands together, laughing happily as the sun shone bright over the grand estate.
