Chapter 8 - A Debt Owed

|
Sunlight streamed through the massive windows of the East Wing suite, waking Lena from a restless sleep.
She sat up in the vast, cloud-like bed, the events of the previous night hitting her in a tidal wave of anxiety. She wasn't in her tiny, drafty apartment. She was in the fortress of a mafia king.
A knock at the door startled her.
"Come in," she called out tentatively.
Victor stepped into the room. He had changed into dark slacks and a simple black Henley that clung to the hard lines of his chest and arms. Without the tailored suit, he looked less like a corporate executive and more like the lethal predator he truly was.
He carried a silver tray containing a steaming cup of coffee and a thick manila folder.
"I told you I would handle your debts," Victor said, setting the tray down on the small table near the window. He gestured for her to look.
Lena slipped out of bed, pulling the silk robe the housekeeper had provided tightly around her. She walked over to the table and opened the folder.
Inside were bank statements, medical bills, and foreclosure notices. Every single one of them had a bright, red "PAID IN FULL" stamp across the front.
"My mother's care facility," Lena gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You paid the entire balance? It was over two hundred thousand dollars."
"I paid the balance, and I prepaid the next ten years," Victor stated smoothly, leaning against the window frame, watching her closely. "I also bought the debt on your apartment building. You officially own the deed. You are completely debt-free, Lena."
Tears sprang to her eyes. She had spent the last five years drowning, suffocating under the weight of her mother’s illness and the crushing poverty that came with it. With a few phone calls, this man had erased her entire nightmare.
"I don't know what to say," she whispered, clutching the papers to her chest. "Thank you. Thank you so much."
"It is a simple transaction," Victor said, though his voice lacked its usual coldness. "You gave me my life. I gave you yours."
He took a step toward her. The sheer, overwhelming proximity of him made her breath catch. He reached out, his calloused thumb gently brushing a tear from her cheek. The touch was incredibly tender, sending a shockwave of heat straight to her core.
"Why do you look so terrified of me, Lena?" he murmured, his dark eyes searching hers.
"Because I know what happens to people who cross you," she answered honestly, unable to look away from his intense gaze. "I heard what happened to Leon."
May you like
Victor didn't deny it. He didn't try to soften the reality of his world.
"Leon was a traitor," Victor said softly, his hand dropping to rest on her shoulder. "But you... you are my savior. As long as you are under my roof, there is nothing in this world you need to fear. Least of all me."
