Chapter 15 - The New Queen

|

Two weeks passed, filled with relentless, systematic violence.

Victor kept his promise. He unleashed the full, terrifying might of the Romano syndicate against his enemies. The Whitmore shipping empire was crippled by sudden "accidents" at the docks. Clara’s father was indicted on federal corruption charges after mysterious, anonymous ledgers were delivered to the FBI. The Volkov family retreated to Chicago, completely driven out of New York.

Victor had won the war, and he had done it with ruthless, absolute precision.

Throughout it all, Lena remained by his side at the safehouse. She didn't hide in the bedroom. She sat in on the meetings with his capos. She poured drinks, listened to the strategies, and slowly, the men who ran the underworld began to look at her not as a liability, but as an extension of the boss's will.

One evening, Victor walked into the living room, holding a sleek black garment bag.

"Get dressed," Victor ordered, a dangerous, proud smirk playing on his lips. "We are going out."

"Is it safe?" Lena asked, setting her book down.

"The city is completely secure," Victor assured her. "And it is time the commission officially meets the woman who saved my life."

An hour later, Lena stood in front of the full-length mirror, unable to recognize the woman staring back at her.

She wore a custom, floor-length gown of midnight-black velvet. It hugged her curves perfectly, exuding power and elegance. Her hair was swept up into a sophisticated style, and a delicate, flawless diamond necklace rested against her collarbone—a gift from Victor.

She wasn't the tired, invisible waitress anymore. She looked like a queen.

Victor stepped up behind her in the mirror, wearing a sharp, tailored tuxedo. He rested his hands on her waist, pulling her back against his solid chest, pressing a soft kiss to her exposed neck.

"You are breathtaking," he murmured.

"I'm nervous," she admitted, her stomach fluttering.

"Don't be," Victor said, his eyes locking onto hers in the reflection. "Tonight, you walk into that room not as a guest, but as my equal. They will bow to you, Lena. Or I will break their legs."

The event was a massive, exclusive gathering of the five families at a private club in Manhattan. When Victor and Lena walked through the heavy mahogany doors, the grand ballroom instantly went silent.

Three hundred people stopped to stare.

But this time, Lena didn't lower her eyes. She didn't step aside. She held her head high, her arm looped securely through Victor’s, walking through the parted crowd with the absolute, terrifying confidence of a woman who knew she owned the monster everyone else feared.
