Chapter 12 - In the Dark

|

Hours bled into a terrifying, agonizing eternity inside the bunker.

The security monitors on the wall displayed the chaos above. The Volkov mercenaries were heavily armed, moving with tactical precision. Victor’s men were fighting valiantly, defending the grand staircases and the hallways, but they were severely outnumbered.

Suddenly, the monitors flickered and died. The backup generator kicked in, bathing the safe room in a dim, eerie red emergency light.

"They cut the main power lines and destroyed the camera feeds," Victor muttered, pacing the room like a caged panther.

Lena sat on a small cot in the corner, her knees pulled tightly to her chest. The reality of the situation was crushing her. She was a maid from Brooklyn, currently trapped in an underground bunker while a mafia war raged above her.

"They are doing this because of me," Lena whispered into the silence.

Victor stopped pacing. He turned his head slowly, looking at her in the dim red light.

"What did you say?"

"If I hadn't punched you at that gala, Leon would have succeeded," Lena said, tears streaming down her face. "You would be dead, Clara would have the empire, and none of this would be happening. Your men are dying upstairs because I couldn't mind my own business."

Victor crossed the room in two massive strides. He dropped to his knees in front of her, setting his shotgun on the floor. He grabbed her hands, pulling them away from her face, forcing her to look at him.

"Do not ever say that again," Victor commanded, his voice trembling with a raw, desperate intensity. "If you hadn't punched me, I would be a corpse. You gave me a second chance at life. You are the only pure thing in this entire, miserable existence I have built. I am fighting for you, Lena. Because you are worth fighting for."

He didn't give her a chance to argue. He leaned forward, crushing his lips against hers.

It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was desperate, bruising, fueled by the terrifying adrenaline of their impending mortality. Lena kissed him back with equal ferocity, tangling her fingers in his dark hair, clinging to the only solid thing in her collapsing world.

He tasted like whiskey, fear, and absolute power. For a fleeting, blinding moment, the war upstairs ceased to exist. There was only the heat of his body and the fierce, undeniable realization that she had fallen completely, irrevocably in love with a monster.

A massive, concussive explosion rocked the foundation of the house.

The heavy steel door of the safe room groaned, the metal buckling slightly inward.

Victor broke the kiss, grabbing his shotgun and standing up, placing himself squarely between Lena and the door.

"They found us," Victor said grimly.
