Chapter 14 - The Aftermath

|

The city safehouse was a massive, unmarked penthouse in Tribeca, completely off the grid and heavily fortified.

By the time they arrived, the sun was rising over the Manhattan skyline, casting a pale, exhausted light over the city. Dmitri and the remaining guards secured the perimeter, leaving Victor and Lena alone in the master suite.

Victor sat on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the floor. The adrenaline had finally crashed, leaving the physical and emotional toll of the night exposed. He looked older, weary, carrying the weight of the lives lost in his home.

Lena walked out of the bathroom holding a warm, damp towel and a first-aid kit.

She didn't speak. She knelt between his knees, gently wiping the soot and dried blood from his face. She carefully cleaned the graze on his cheek, applying an antiseptic patch with gentle, trembling fingers.

Victor closed his eyes, leaning into her touch. For a man who had never allowed anyone to see his vulnerability, his complete surrender to her care was profoundly intimate.

"You should be terrified of me," Victor murmured, opening his dark eyes to look at her. "You saw what I am capable of tonight, Lena. I am a killer."

"You killed men who were trying to murder us," Lena said steadily, refusing to look away. "I saw a man who protected his home. I saw the man who paid my mother’s medical bills when he didn't have to."

Victor reached up, his large hand gently covering hers as she pressed the bandage to his cheek.

"I am going to destroy Clara’s father for this," Victor stated, his voice devoid of anger, stating a simple, inevitable fact. "I am going to dismantle the Volkov syndicate. The next few weeks are going to be violent, bloody, and dark. I want to send you away. To Europe. To somewhere safe until it is over."

Lena pulled her hand away, stepping back. "You promised you wouldn't send me away."

"That was before they breached my home," Victor argued, standing up. "You are my only weakness now, Lena. If they get to you, they break me. I cannot fight a war if I am constantly terrified for your life."

"If you send me away, I will never come back," Lena said, her voice trembling but fierce. "I spent my whole life being invisible, Victor. Being pushed aside. You told me I belonged to you. You told me I wasn't just collateral damage. Do not push me away now because you're scared."

Victor stared at her, stunned by the sheer, unyielding steel in the woman he had saved from a catering hall.

He crossed the distance between them, framing her face in his hands, and kissed her fiercely. "Then you stay by my side. But from now on, you don't hide in the shadows."
