Chapter 16 - The Public Declaration

|

The atmosphere in the private club was electric with tension and awe. Whispers followed them as they moved toward the VIP section—the exact same setup as the night everything changed, but this time, the dynamics were entirely different.

Clara Whitmore’s absence was a glaring void that everyone noticed but no one dared mention. Instead, the patriarchs of the five families stepped forward to pay their respects to the undisputed king of New York.

Victor handled the pleasantries with cold, terrifying charm, but he never let go of Lena’s hand.

"Don Romano," an older, heavily scarred boss said, bowing his head slightly. He turned his calculating gaze toward Lena. "And this must be the remarkable woman we have heard so much about. The one who exposed the traitor."

"This is Lena," Victor stated, his voice echoing with absolute authority. He didn't offer her last name. He didn't offer an explanation. "She speaks with my voice. Any disrespect shown to her is a direct insult to my bloodline. Is that understood, Carmine?"

The older boss swallowed hard, nodding quickly. "Of course, Victor. She is a vision. We are honored to have her among us."

The night proceeded like a dark, elegant coronation. Lena navigated the shark-infested waters of the mafia elite with surprising grace. She had spent years observing wealthy people from the invisible shadows of catering halls; she knew exactly how to smile without giving anything away, how to deflect probing questions, and how to command a room with silence.

Victor watched her with undisguised pride. She wasn't just surviving his world; she was mastering it.

Later in the evening, they stepped out onto a private, glass-enclosed balcony overlooking the city. The noise of the party was muffled behind thick doors.

Victor pulled her into his arms, wrapping his tuxedo jacket around her shivering shoulders.

"You were perfect in there," he murmured, kissing the top of her head.

"They look at me like I’m a loaded gun," Lena chuckled softly, leaning her head against his chest.

"To them, you are," Victor said, tilting her chin up. "You are my only weakness, Lena. But you are also my greatest strength."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box.

Lena’s breath hitched. She stared at the box, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

Victor didn't drop to one knee. He opened the box, revealing a massive, flawless diamond ring that sparkled brilliantly in the city lights.

"I am a dangerous man, Lena," Victor said, his voice dropping into a solemn, heavy vow. "My life is violent. It is complicated. But if you wear this ring, I swear to God, I will spend every second of my remaining days worshipping you, protecting you, and loving you."

May you like

Tears blurred Lena’s vision. She looked from the ring to the dark, terrifying, beautiful man who had changed her life.

"Yes," she whispered fiercely. "Put it on me."
