Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Queen

|
A week later, the chaos of the gang war had finally subsided. The Volkov syndicate was entirely eradicated, and Victor’s iron grip on the city was undisputed.
The penthouse was quiet, bathed in the warm, golden light of the late afternoon sun.
Lena stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a soft, oversized cashmere sweater that belonged to Victor. The bruises on her face were fading to a pale yellow, but the internal scars of the abduction would take time to heal.
Victor walked up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, pressing a soft kiss to her neck.
"Are you okay?" he murmured, his voice infinitely gentle.
"I'm safe," Lena replied softly, leaning back into his solid warmth. "That's all that matters."
Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out the heavy diamond engagement ring. He took her left hand and slid the ring back onto her finger, right where it belonged.
"I am a monster, Lena," Victor whispered, staring at the ring. "You have seen the darkest, most violent parts of my soul. I dragged you into a world of blood and terror."
"You dragged me out of an invisible life," Lena corrected, turning around in his arms to look up into his dark, silver-flecked eyes. "You showed me that I have a voice. You showed me that I am strong enough to survive."
She reached up, her fingers gently tracing the scar on his eyebrow.
"I don't want a safe, boring life, Victor," she said fiercely. "I want you. The monster, the king, the man who tears cities apart to find me. I accept all of it."
Victor stared at her, overwhelmed by the sheer, unshakeable devotion of the woman he loved. He leaned down and kissed her, a deep, passionate, and consuming promise of forever.
They had survived the fire, and they had emerged stronger, united by blood, loyalty, and an unbreakable bond.
But in the underworld, peace is always temporary.
As they kissed, the encrypted red phone on Victor’s mahogany desk began to ring. It was a line that only rang for international emergencies.
Victor broke the kiss, his jaw tightening. He walked over to the desk and picked up the receiver.
"Romano," he answered coldly.
He listened for a long moment, the color slowly draining from his face. He locked eyes with Lena, a new, terrifying shadow falling over his features.
"I understand," Victor said softly, hanging up the phone.
"Victor?" Lena asked, her heart suddenly pounding. "What is it?"
May you like
"It seems," Victor said grimly, reaching for his weapon holster on the desk, "that Clara Whitmore’s father didn't flee to Europe like we thought. He fled to the Italian Commission. And they just declared open war on New York."
Lena didn't flinch. She stood tall, the diamond glittering on her finger, and walked over to stand beside her king. The invisible maid was dead. The queen was ready for war.
