I stepped closer to the display case, my breath catching slightly in my throat as I read the words engraved on the brass plaque.
For Emma.
Who proved that no wall is entirely unbreakable, and no child is ever truly forgotten.

I stared at the plaque, a profound, overwhelming wave of emotion washing over me. I reached out, resting my fingertips gently against the cool glass of the display case.
"You spoke to Leo?" I asked quietly, turning to look at Ethan, who had walked up beside me.
"He called me yesterday," Ethan nodded, a soft, genuine smile illuminating his features. "He is doing incredibly well, Emma. He is living in Colorado, hiking mountains, and learning how to just be a normal teenager. He asked me to make sure his name was on the plaque."
William stood a few paces back, observing the two of us with a look of deep, abiding peace. He didn't intrude on the moment; he simply existed in the space, a quiet, supportive ally who had spent the last decade proving he was capable of profound change.
"You didn't have to do this, Ethan," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "The advocacy work... it was never about seeking recognition."
"I know it wasn't," Ethan replied steadily, looking directly into my eyes. "But it is important for the people who walk through this building to know the history of how it became a sanctuary. They need to know that the monsters don't always win. They need to know that courage isn't a superpower. It is just a choice made by ordinary people holding fire pokers and cell phones."
I let out a soft, watery laugh, wiping a single tear from my cheek.
"It is beautiful, Ethan," I whispered, looking back at the open doorway in the puzzle. "Thank you."

He didn't ask me to carry his childhood forever. He didn't claim that the rescue erased what happened before it. He simply acknowledged the profound, unyielding truth of our shared history, and in doing so, he set both of us completely free.
