Chapter 29

The cold, biting rain of the alleyway was a brutal but profoundly welcome shock to the system. It felt like absolute freedom. I dragged Leo out from beneath the slowly rising garage door, our clothes instantly soaked by the downpour. The screeching of the fire alarms inside the massive estate provided a chaotic symphony that covered our escape perfectly.
"Where are we going?" Leo gasped, his teeth chattering violently as the cold air hit his fragile, emaciated frame.
"To safety," I promised, looking frantically down the dark, narrow alley.
Headlights suddenly blazed at the end of the brick corridor, blinding me for a terrifying second. A heavy, black SUV accelerated aggressively down the alley, the tires screeching on the wet pavement. It slammed on its brakes, skidding to a halt exactly five feet in front of us.
I instinctively pushed Leo behind me, bracing for a confrontation with Mercer's external security detail.
But the driver's side door flew open, and a tall, familiar figure stepped out into the rain. It was William.
"Get in!" William shouted over the roar of the alarms, throwing open the heavy rear doors of the armored SUV. "Right now! We have exactly two minutes before the local police arrive to respond to the fire alarms!"
I didn't ask questions. I grabbed Leo and shoved him into the warm, leather interior of the backseat before diving in right behind him. William slammed the door shut, sprinted around the front, and jumped into the driver's seat. He threw the massive vehicle into reverse, accelerating backwards down the alley with terrifying, absolute precision.
"Are you both unharmed?" William asked, his voice tight with adrenaline as he spun the steering wheel, whipping the SUV onto a quiet side street just as three police cruisers flew past us toward the Mercer estate, their sirens wailing.
"We are okay," I gasped, pulling a thick wool blanket from the seat and wrapping it tightly around Leo's shivering shoulders. "Leo is safe."
William glanced in the rearview mirror, his eyes meeting the terrified, exhausted gaze of the young boy wrapped in the blanket. A profound, agonizing wave of empathy washed over William's face. He knew exactly what it meant to see a child pulled from a locked room.

"You did beautifully, Emma," William said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "Luis is scrubbing the digital footprint of the hack right now. Ethan successfully extracted himself during the fire alarm panic. He is taking a taxi back to my apartment. We won."
I leaned back against the leather seat, pulling Leo securely against my side. I closed my eyes, letting the absolute, undeniable reality of the victory wash over me. We had broken the cycle.
