Chapter 20

|

The realization that another child was being subjected to the exact same psychological and physical imprisonment that Ethan had endured required an immediate escalation in strategy. I could not fight Arthur Mercer with a small advocacy program alone. I needed someone who understood the ruthless, Machiavellian world of billionaire corporate governance.

I needed William.

I arranged a meeting at a quiet, incredibly discreet coffee shop near the financial district, far away from the prying eyes of the tabloids that still occasionally haunted our peripheral vision. William arrived precisely on time, wearing a simple gray overcoat, his silver hair neatly combed. He looked healthier, more grounded than the man who had once allowed his empire to blind him to his son's suffering.

"Emma," William greeted me, pulling out a chair and sitting across the small wooden table. "It's good to see you. Though I assume this isn't a purely social invitation. Your text sounded urgent."

"It is," I said, leaning forward and lowering my voice. "William, what do you know about Arthur Mercer?"

William's expression instantly tightened, a guarded, corporate mask slipping smoothly into place. "Mercer. He is a predator in a tailored suit. I’ve dealt with him a few times on municipal zoning boards. He has zero ethical boundaries. Why are you asking about him?"

"Because one of my domestic workers came to me yesterday," I explained, maintaining intense eye contact. "Mercer is holding his orphaned nephew, Leo, locked in a sub-basement. He is using a colleague of Felix Ward to heavily medicate the boy into incompetence so he can steal Leo's controlling stake in their family company."

William closed his eyes for a long, heavy moment. The mention of Felix Ward’s associates was a direct, painful strike to his own past failures. When he opened his eyes, they were filled with a cold, terrifying resolve.

"Are you absolutely certain?" William asked quietly.

"I have the financial records proving motive, and eyewitness testimony of the boy's location," I confirmed. "But I cannot go to the police yet. Mercer's security will stall them at the gate, giving him enough time to move the boy and claim my worker is a disgruntled, lying employee. I need a way inside that house. I need to bypass his security network."

"Mercer's home is a fortress," William stated analytically, tapping his finger on the table. "He employs former military contractors. But he is also incredibly vain. He hosts a massive charity gala every autumn to maintain his philanthropic facade. If we can get you inside during that event, his security will be distracted by the sheer volume of high-profile guests."

"Can you get me an invitation?" I asked.

Before William could answer, a familiar, steady voice spoke from right behind my chair.

"He doesn't have to. I can."
