Chapter 31

|

The legal dismantling of Arthur Mercer was a highly orchestrated, incredibly satisfying spectacle. Because the federal prosecutors were involved, Mercer could not leverage his vast wealth to bury the investigation. Dr. Aris Thorne was arrested at his private clinic two days after the gala, charged with massive medical fraud and the illegal confinement of a minor. Facing decades in federal prison, Thorne instantly flipped, surrendering all of his encrypted clinical notes detailing exactly how Mercer had paid him to systematically destroy Leo's cognitive function.

A week later, I sat in my small, practical advocacy office, watching the breaking news on a small television mounted in the corner.

Arthur Mercer was being led out of his massive corporate headquarters in handcuffs, surrounded by federal agents, his arrogant, unyielding facade entirely shattered by the flashing cameras of the press.

The door to my office opened, and Sofia walked in.

She looked completely different from the terrified, trembling girl who had sat in my chair just weeks ago. She was wearing a bright, colorful dress, her posture straight and confident.

"They arrested him," Sofia said, pointing at the television screen with a massive, triumphant smile.

"They did," I confirmed, turning the television off and offering her a warm smile. "And they secured a multi-million dollar settlement from his estate to compensate the domestic workers he threatened and abused under those fraudulent non-disclosure agreements. You are going to be very well taken care of, Sofia."

"I don't care about the money," Sofia said, though the relief in her eyes was evident. "I just care that Leo is safe. Have you spoken to him?"

"I visited him at the hospital yesterday," I replied. "William's attorneys successfully transferred full guardianship of Leo's trust to a secure, independent legal firm until he turns eighteen. He is going to live with a carefully vetted, loving foster family out of state while he finishes his education. He is going to be completely okay."

Sofia walked around the desk and wrapped her arms around me in a fierce, tight hug.

"You saved his life, Emma," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You taught me that we don't have to be invisible."

"You saved his life, Sofia," I corrected gently, pulling back to look at her. "I just helped you turn on the light. You were the one brave enough to listen to a child crying in the dark."
