Chapter 21

I turned sharply in my chair. Standing behind me, holding a cup of black coffee and wearing a casual leather jacket, was Ethan. He was eighteen, tall, and possessed a quiet, commanding presence that commanded the space around him without any arrogance.

"Ethan," I breathed in surprise. "What are you doing here?"

"I was supposed to have lunch with Dad," Ethan said, pulling up a third chair and sitting down at our small table. He looked directly at me, his eyes sharp and completely unclouded. "I heard most of the conversation as I was walking up. You are talking about a boy locked in a basement."

"Ethan, this is complicated corporate business," William started, his instinct to shield his son immediately flaring up.

"Don't," Ethan interrupted, raising a hand. His voice was entirely respectful but completely absolute. "Don't treat me like I am fragile, Dad. Not about this. Never about this."

William stopped, realizing his mistake. He nodded slowly, accepting the boundary his son had just firmly drawn.

Ethan turned his attention back to me. "Arthur Mercer is hosting the 'Children's Future Foundation' gala next Friday at his primary estate. It's an invite-only event for ultra-high-net-worth individuals. My trust received a gold-embossed invitation three weeks ago. I was going to decline."

"You shouldn't be involved in this, Ethan," I said gently, feeling a powerful surge of protective instinct. "It is far too close to what you went through. It is dangerous, and it is emotionally toxic."

"Emma," Ethan replied, his voice incredibly steady, lacking any of the childhood tremor I remembered from the dark. "You taught me that the truth doesn't stay hidden if someone is brave enough to turn on the light. You opened the wall for me. I am not going to sit in a safe, comfortable apartment while another kid suffocates in the dark."

I looked at him, truly seeing the man he had become. He was not a victim seeking revenge; he was a survivor demanding justice.

"I have a plus-one on my invitation," Ethan continued, a small, strategic smile forming on his lips. "I will attend as the wealthy, naive young heir making his debut in the philanthropic society. Mercer will be absolutely desperate to court my trust's money. He will focus all his attention on me."

"And while he is distracted by you," William realized, catching onto the strategy perfectly, "Emma will be your plus-one. She can slip away from the ballroom and navigate the house."

"Exactly," Ethan said. He looked at me, his eyes burning with an intense, beautiful courage. "We are going to get him out, Emma. Together."
