Chapter 23

|

Friday evening arrived with a biting, cold wind that swept through the city, but inside the sprawling Mercer estate, the atmosphere was suffocatingly warm and opulent. The sheer scale of the wealth on display was nauseating. Crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, blinding light over women draped in diamonds and men wearing custom tuxedos, all gathered under the hypocritical banner of protecting the future of vulnerable children.

I sat in the passenger seat of a sleek, armored town car as it pulled up to the grand entrance. I was wearing an elegant, understated midnight-blue evening gown provided by Caroline, my hair styled to perfection. I looked exactly like the sophisticated plus-one of a young billionaire, a perfect camouflage designed to render me entirely unremarkable in a room obsessed with status.

Ethan sat beside me, adjusting his bowtie. He looked remarkably calm, radiating a quiet, grounded confidence.

"Are you ready?" Ethan asked softly, as the valet approached the car.

"I should be asking you that," I replied, looking at him carefully. "Being back in an environment like this... surrounded by these kinds of people. It is bound to bring back difficult memories."

"It does," Ethan admitted honestly, taking a slow, centering breath. "But I am not the frightened kid hiding behind a painting anymore. I am holding the keys now. Let's go ruin Arthur Mercer's night."

We stepped out of the car, instantly assaulted by the flashbulbs of society photographers gathered near the entrance. Ethan navigated the press with practiced ease, offering polite, empty smiles that gave away absolutely nothing.

The moment we entered the grand ballroom, the heavy, oppressive smell of expensive perfume and aged scotch hit me. It was a sensory flashback to the Sterling gala nine years ago. I forced my muscles to relax, gripping my small clutch purse tightly. Inside it rested the cloned keycard and a secure earpiece connected directly to Luis, who was monitoring the estate's external security feeds from a van parked three blocks away.

"Target acquired," Ethan whispered, leaning in closely as if whispering an intimate joke.

I followed his gaze. Standing near a towering ice sculpture was Arthur Mercer. He was a broad, imposing man with a forced, charismatic smile that never quite reached his cold, calculating eyes.

"Showtime," Ethan said, his voice entirely devoid of fear. He offered me his arm, and together, we walked directly into the center of the serpent's den.
