Chapter 24

Ethan’s approach to Arthur Mercer was a masterstroke of psychological manipulation. He didn't stride up with the arrogance of a seasoned executive; instead, he adopted the subtle, slightly hesitant posture of a wealthy young heir overwhelmed by his newly acquired independence. It was a performance designed specifically to activate Mercer’s predatory instincts.
"Mr. Mercer," Ethan said, extending his hand as we approached the ice sculpture. "I'm Ethan Sterling. It is an absolute privilege to finally meet you. My father speaks very highly of your aggressive real estate acquisitions."
Mercer’s cold eyes instantly locked onto Ethan, his forced smile widening into something that resembled genuine, avaricious delight. He gripped Ethan’s hand firmly, completely ignoring my presence beside him.
"Ethan Sterling," Mercer boomed, his voice dripping with false warmth. "I was thrilled when your trust RSVP'd. We have all been watching your transition into adulthood with great interest. Your father left massive shoes to fill, but I can see you have the ambition for it."
"I have the capital," Ethan corrected modestly, playing the perfect mark. "What I need is guidance. I am looking to diversify the trust's holdings outside of our traditional tech sectors. I was hoping to pick your brain about the commercial zoning projects you are launching in the harbor district."
Mercer practically salivated at the prospect of maneuvering the vast Sterling wealth into his own ventures. "I would be absolutely delighted, Ethan. In fact, let me introduce you to my chief financial officer. We have some preliminary models I think you would find fascinating."
Ethan shot me a swift, almost imperceptible glance. The distraction was perfectly set.
"I'll leave you men to discuss high finance," I said smoothly, offering a polite, bored smile. "I think I will go admire the art gallery in the west hall."
"Of course, my dear," Mercer dismissed me with a wave of his hand, his focus entirely consumed by Ethan. "Enjoy the champagne."
I turned and walked away, my pace slow and measured until I was completely out of Mercer's line of sight. The moment I slipped behind a massive floral arrangement near the corridor entrance, I pressed the small earpiece hidden beneath my hair.

"I am clear of the ballroom," I whispered quietly. "Luis, guide me in."
"I have you on the thermal scan," Luis's voice crackled softly in my ear. "Take the servant's stairwell at the end of the west hall. Mercer's primary security detail is entirely clustered around the main entrances. You have a clear path to the sub-basement."
