Chapter 7 - THE BLOODLINE OF SECRETS|

I gripped the leather seat belt, my heart racing as the heavy SUV wove through traffic at ninety miles an hour.
"He hid it in our old house in Newark," I confessed over the roar of the engine. "Inside the wall cavity behind the gas meter in the basement. He swore to my mother that if anything ever happened to him, those files would be our life insurance."
"Did Rocco find them?" Enzo asked, his gaze penetrating.
"No," I shook my head. "Rocco burned the office upstairs, but he never searched the basement roots. I went back three years ago when the house was abandoned. The metal container was still there."
"What's in those files, Amelia?" Tomaso asked from the front seat, reloading his sidearm.
"Names," I said softly. "Not just Marciano captains. State senators, judges, federal prosecutors, and the head of the Port Authority. My father called it 'Project Belladonna'. It was a complete blueprint of how organized crime bought the entire tri-state political system."
Enzo's expression hardened into stone.
"Gianni isn't trying to kill me just to take over the family," Enzo realized, his voice dangerously dark. "He’s trying to kill me because he sold the family empire to Senator Falcone. If those files leak, both of their empires crumble overnight."
Suddenly, a heavy violent impact slammed into the rear bumper of our SUV.
CRASH!
Our vehicle fishtailed across three lanes of traffic, hitting the metal guardrail with a shower of orange sparks.
"They're trying to ram us off the bridge!" the driver yelled, fighting the steering wheel.

Enzo rolled down his dark tinted window, cold wind howling into the cabin, and pointed his weapon at the pursuing sedan’s front tire.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
