Chapter 13 - THE POISONED BLOODLINE|

The truth hung in the air of the modern safe house like a heavy fog.

"Your father was murdered because he realized my father's cause of death wasn't a stroke," Enzo explained, his fingers tracing the cold ink of my father's notes. "He found the chemical orders imported through the docks. Synthetic arsenic."

"Gianni murdered his own father?" I asked, horrified.

"Gianni isn't my father's son," Enzo said bitterly. "He was the product of my stepmother's affair with Senator Falcone. They placed him inside our family like a parasite, waiting for the right moment to hollow out the Marciano empire from within."

Tomaso walked into the kitchen, carrying a laptop connected to a secure satellite uplink.

"Boss," Tomaso said grimly. "Gianni just called an emergency meeting of the Commission at the Grand Metropolitan Hotel for tomorrow night. He announced to the other families that you were killed in a tragic hotel fire today."

Enzo offered a terrible, beautiful smile—the smile of a devil who had just been handed the keys to hell.

"He thinks I'm dead," Enzo murmured, pouring two glasses of heavy red wine and handing one to me. "He thinks he’s going to be crowned the new Don of New York tomorrow night."

"What are we going to do?" I asked, holding the crystal glass with both hands.

"We aren't going to hide, Amelia," Enzo said, looking deep into my eyes. "We're going to attend his coronation. And you are going to deliver your father's final audit."
