Chapter 9 - The Inheritance

|
I dove headfirst into developing the primary functional drawings. Adrian hit the phones, desperately contacting manufacturers to gauge production viability. I spent my weekends testing prototype components in a rented, windowless workspace, having secured written permission from my laboratory supervisor to pursue the invention independently. We officially registered the company under the placeholder name 'Marlowe Medical Systems,' proudly using my maiden name because the entirety of the foundational technical work was mine.
Then, disaster struck. A severe economic recession crippled the medical supply market, and Adrian was unceremoniously laid off. Our crushing mortgage payments didn't stop. My father’s health went into a rapid, terrifying decline. And to complicate matters further, I was pregnant with our first child, Sophie.
Adrian relentlessly pitched our company, but every single bank outright rejected his loan applications. Helixora had zero revenue, no finished product to demonstrate, and absolutely no backing from outside investors. We were drowning in a sea of debt and dead ends.

A year prior, my grandmother had passed away, leaving me an inheritance of just over four hundred thousand dollars. It was the first and only significant sum of money I had ever possessed entirely on my own. My grandmother had spent forty grueling years running a small neighborhood pharmacy, saving her pennies with a discipline that bordered on the fanatical. On her deathbed, she held my hand and told me that this money was meant to grant me choices—choices that no husband, no boss, and no financial catastrophe could ever strip away.
I trusted the man I loved. Against all conventional wisdom, I made the terrifying decision to withdraw the majority of that money and inject it directly into Helixora, gambling my grandmother's lifelong legacy on our shared dream. I had no idea I was handing him the very weapon he would later use to erase me.
