Chapter 4 - The Refusal

|

I lifted my head, keeping my posture rigid, and looked directly into Adrian’s eyes. The air in the boardroom seemed to thicken, becoming almost too dense to breathe.

“You told the board of directors that I am making a false claim?” I asked, my voice ringing out clear and steady, devoid of any tremble.

Adrian let out a slow, measured breath, attempting to project the weary patience of a reasonable man forced to deal with an hysterical wife.

“I told them the objective truth. You were my wife. You supported me at home. I’ve always publicly and privately acknowledged that.”

“You told our early investors that I was your co-founder.”

“I may have used that word casually in the beginning, in passing,” he replied without missing a beat, his eyes cold and unblinking.

“You gave me forty percent of this company.”

“No,” his answer shot back, sharp and immediate.

“You severely misunderstood informal conversations we had when the company barely existed on paper.”

He seemed to draw strength from the cowardly, complicit silence of his board. He leaned forward, fully committing to the monologue he had crafted.

“Claire made profound personal sacrifices during the course of our marriage. I am not denying that fact. But personal sacrifice is not the same as corporate ownership. She never invested a single dollar of her own. She never held a formal operational role. She never developed Helixora’s core technology. She stayed home, raised our beautiful children, and lived a very comfortable, privileged life because of the success of this company.”

His words felt like deliberate, calculated strikes of a machete, designed to sever the very roots of our shared history. He was erasing the woman who had paid his employees' salaries when his own checking account held less than six hundred dollars.

I calmly reached out, closed the thick agreement, and pushed it away from me.

“I won’t sign this.”

Adrian’s expression instantly hardened. The mask of patience slipped, revealing the ruthless corporate shark beneath.

“Then you leave us absolutely no choice but to vigorously defend the company against a baseless and disruptive claim.”
