Chapter 12 - The Affair and the Separation

By the time the company reached its tenth anniversary, the erasure was nearly complete. I could attend a lavish Helixora charity gala, shake hands with senior vice presidents, and realize with a sickening jolt that none of them had the slightest clue I had funded the very foundation of their careers. The systematic deletion of my legacy happened through hundreds of tiny, deliberate revisions.
Then, Sloane Mercer entered the picture.
She was fiercely intelligent, ruthlessly strategic, and possessed an uncanny radar for identifying exactly where power was concentrated. Within a mere three years, she skyrocketed from an external consultant to Senior Vice President of Strategy. Adrian constantly praised her clinical ability to make tough, objective decisions without being hindered by "emotions."
It didn't take long for me to realize that "emotional" was simply the derogatory code word they used to dismiss anyone who dared to object to their self-serving agendas.
Sloane began brazenly showing up at our family dinners, always armed with the excuse of an "urgent business crisis." She made it a point to memorize my children’s school schedules, Adrian’s preferred airline seating, and his favorite vintage of Bordeaux. Once, she stood right in the center of my kitchen, casually complimenting the heirloom pendant my grandmother had left me, all while wearing a silk scarf I had specifically purchased for Adrian during a romantic trip to Montreal.
The sheer audacity of her presence finally broke my denial. I investigated, and I found the undeniable proof of their affair. When I confronted Adrian, throwing the printed messages on his desk, he didn't even bother to apologize. He simply pivoted from denial to cold justification.
“Our marriage has been completely dead for years, Claire,” he said with a chilling lack of empathy.
