Chapter 6 - The Original Deposit

Gabriel delicately extracted a yellowed, slightly brittle wire transfer memorandum from the gray folder. He handled it with the care of an archaeologist uncovering a relic and placed it under the document camera. Instantly, the image of the old paper flashed onto the massive projection screen behind Adrian, magnifying the stark, black, typewritten letters.

At the very top of the page was the unmistakable name of my late grandmother’s estate account. Directly beneath it was the precise amount: $325,000.00.

But it was the memo line, typed in plain, undeniable ink, that made the entire room stop breathing:

"INITIAL CAPITAL CONTRIBUTION FROM CLAIRE MARLOWE WHITMORE IN EXCHANGE FOR 40% FOUNDING EQUITY IN HELIXORA BIOMEDICAL SYSTEMS."

Gabriel let the words hang in the air, his eyes scanning the shocked faces of the executives before he continued, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

“The initial funds did not come from Mr. Whitmore. They originated from an inheritance account belonging solely and exclusively to Mrs. Whitmore. Furthermore, the transfer memorandum explicitly identifies her equity interest in the corporation.”

For the first time that morning, the smug, patronizing smile vanished entirely from Sloane Mercer’s face. All the color drained from her cheeks, leaving her looking sickly and pale.

Adrian whipped around in his chair, staring up at the projection screen. His eyes were wide, panicked, as if sheer force of will could somehow rearrange the damning letters into a different sentence.

“That document… that document was never properly formalized,” he stammered, his normally smooth, commanding baritone faltering into a desperate rasp.

Gabriel showed no mercy. He simply opened a second folder.

“We have also located the company’s first capitalization schedule, the original corporate banking resolution, three early-stage investor pitch decks, and a founders' memorandum signed by both of you. Every single one of these documents identifies Claire Whitmore as a forty-percent founding shareholder.”

The polished, invincible armor Adrian had spent over a decade building shattered into a million pieces right there on the boardroom floor.
