Chapter 7 - The Silence of the Room

|
Marian Cho, the iron-willed chairwoman who had maintained a strict neutrality since the meeting began, finally broke. She leaned aggressively over the table, her piercing gaze slicing right through Adrian.
“Adrian, you explicitly told this board of directors that there was absolutely no documentary evidence to support Claire’s claims of ownership.”
Adrian swallowed hard. In his absolute panic, his highly calculated brain seemed to completely short-circuit.
“There wasn’t supposed to be,” he blurted out.
The words escaped his lips before his conscious mind could bite them back. It was a fatal, irreversible error.
The entire boardroom was instantly swallowed by a terrifying, suffocating silence.
This was not the polite, deferential silence that typically occurs when executives disagree on quarterly projections. This was the deafening, horrific silence of a room full of powerful people who had just listened to their visionary CEO accidentally confess to a massive, deliberate cover-up. It was the silence of absolute shock and profound disgust.

I sat perfectly straight, feeling the heavy, rhythmic pounding of my own heart against my ribs. For fourteen years, I had allowed this man to imprison me in a cage of false promises and gaslighting. He had systematically brainwashed me into believing that my grueling sacrifices were merely the expected duties of a supportive wife, and that I had no legal or moral right to the empire I had traded my youth to help build.
Sloane Mercer looked at Adrian with sheer, unadulterated terror, silently begging him to pull a miracle out of thin air. But Adrian was frozen, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the table. He fully realized that with one panicked sentence, he hadn’t just admitted to hiding evidence; he had personally signed his own confession for defrauding his board of directors. The throne he sat upon was violently crumbling beneath him.
