CHAPTER 9: THE UNBREAKABLE FOUNDATION

CHAPTER 9: THE UNBREAKABLE FOUNDATION

We left the estate before the twilight could turn into dark.

The old family home would belong to the bankruptcy court by the first of the month.

The reputation they had spent decades lying to protect had vanished into thin smoke.

When I arrived back at our apartment, Noah was waiting for me on the porch.

He was holding a book, his face calm, his breathing steady in the cool evening air.

He looked up as my boots clicked against the concrete steps.

"Did they try to make you go back, Mom?" he asked quietly.

I knelt down in front of him, wrapping my arms around his shoulders, holding him so close I could feel the steady beat of his heart against my chest.

"They can't make us do anything anymore, Noah," I whispered into his hair.

"The house is gone."

"The lies are finished."

"The past has completely run out of ammunition."

He let out a long, clean breath and smiled.

It was the bright, unburdened smile of a child who finally knew the horizon belonged to him.

Lies can build a beautiful, expensive cage that lasts for decades, convincing an entire family that they are nothing without the gold bars.

But a mother's love only needs a single second of absolute truth to tear the whole structure down to the ground.

We walked inside together, shutting the door on the ruins of the people who had tried to break us.

We had survived the storm.

And this time, we were building on solid ground.
