Chase walked away from the window, stepping into the center of the dusty room.
"They taught me how to be a bully in this house, Aunt Evelyn," he said, looking directly at me.
"Every time I hit someone at school, Grandfather paid the principal to delete the record."
"Every time I threw a tantrum, Mom bought me a new device to make me stop crying."
"They told me I was better than everyone else because of our last name."
Lauren stepped into the room, her face pale with an intense, defensive panic.
"Shut up, Chase! We did everything to give you a perfect life!" she shrieked.
"You gave me a prison sentence, Mom," Chase said quietly.
"The counselors in the facility were the first people who ever told me the truth."
"They told me that if I didn't stop, I was going to end up destroying myself."
He looked down at the folder in my arms.
"I’m not going back to the old business," he said to his grandparents.
"And I’m not going to let you use Noah to save your house."
My mother covered her face with her hands and began to cry quietly.
