CHAPTER 6: THE GRANDPARENTS' LEDGER

CHAPTER 6: THE GRANDPARENTS' LEDGER
The next evening, my father called me.
For the first time in twenty-four months.
His voice didn't carry the booming authority of my childhood.
It sounded thin. Frail. Desperate.
"The family business is collapsing, Evelyn," he said without a greeting.
"The public records from the trial ruined our corporate contracts."
"If Noah doesn't sign that release, the bank liquidates everything by the end of the month."
The truth finally came out into the light.
They hadn't favored Chase because they loved him more.
They hadn't hidden his violence because he was special.
They did it because Lauren held the secondary financial keys to the family’s offshore trust fund.
It was always a calculation.
It was always about the money.
They had sacrificed my son's physical safety to protect a corporate legacy.
"You built an entire empire on my son's broken ribs," I said into the receiver.
"We were trying to protect the future," he choked out.
"You were protecting a bank account," I countered.
May you like
"And now, you can watch it burn."
I hung up the phone before he could reply.
