EPILOGUE: TWO YEARS LATER

EPILOGUE: TWO YEARS LATER
Two years passed.
Noah was ten.
Then eleven.
Then twelve.
The scars on his ribs faded.
The emotional scars took longer.
But they healed too.
We moved to a different city.
Started over.
Built a life surrounded by people who genuinely cared.
One evening, while helping Noah with homework, I asked him something I had wondered for years.
"Do you ever miss them?"
He thought quietly.
Then smiled.
"I miss the family I thought I had."
My heart broke a little.
Then he added:
"But I don't miss the family that chose Chase."
I pulled him into a hug.
In that moment, I realized something important.
Justice hadn't erased what happened.
It hadn't given Noah back that terrible day.
But it had given him something else.
The certainty that he mattered.
That his voice mattered.
That when he was hurt, someone would stand up and fight for him.
No matter who stood on the other side.
And in the end, that was enough.
Because family isn't defined by blood.
It's defined by who stays beside you when you can't breathe.
May you like
And when Noah needed them most, only one person chose him.
His mother.
