CHAPTER 1: THE HOSPITAL

CHAPTER 1: THE HOSPITAL
The ambulance doors slammed shut behind us.
Noah lay on the stretcher, struggling for every breath.
I held his hand the entire ride.
"Stay with me, sweetheart."
His fingers squeezed mine weakly.
The paramedics worked quickly, attaching monitors and administering oxygen.
One of them looked at the bruising already forming across Noah's ribs and exchanged a glance with his partner.
That look terrified me.
When we arrived at the hospital, doctors rushed him into imaging.
I sat alone in the waiting room, my hands trembling.
Then my phone started ringing.
Lauren.
I ignored it.
Then my mother.
Ignored.
Then my father.
Ignored.
The messages came one after another.
You're blowing this out of proportion.
Don't ruin Chase's life.
Family handles things privately.
I deleted every single one.
An hour later, the emergency physician entered the room.
His face was serious.
"Mrs. Carter?"
I stood immediately.
"Your son has three fractured ribs."
The room spun.
"He also suffered a partially collapsed lung."
I nearly collapsed into the chair.
"What?"
The doctor nodded.
"If you had waited much longer to bring him in, this could have become life-threatening."
Life-threatening.
The words echoed in my head.
While my family worried about protecting Chase...
My son could have died.
At that moment, every ounce of guilt disappeared.
I knew exactly what I had to do.
I was pressing charges.
Against all of them if necessary.
No matter the cost.
No matter who got angry.
No matter who called me heartless.
Because Noah deserved someone willing to fight for him.
And I intended to be that person.
The next morning, two police detectives arrived.
They interviewed Noah gently.
I sat beside him.
"Can you tell us what happened?" one asked.
Noah swallowed hard.
Tears filled his eyes.
"Chase got mad because I wouldn't let him play."
"What happened then?"
"He pushed me."
The room became very quiet.
"Then he kicked me."
I felt sick.
"How many times?"
Noah looked down.
"I don't know."
The detective wrote something in his notebook.
Then Noah said the words that changed everything.
"He said nobody would believe me."
The detective stopped writing.
"What else did he say?"
Noah's voice cracked.
"He said Grandma and Grandpa always take his side."
Neither detective said a word.
But their expressions told me everything.
They already knew this was bigger than a playground fight.
May you like
Much bigger.
And they were about to find out exactly how deep it went.
