Chapter 9 - The Doorbell Tape

|

The following afternoon, an unexpected visitor contacted Nathan Cole’s office.

Patricia Owen, a seventy-two-year-old retired schoolteacher who lived next door to the Mercers, offered to hand over audio files recorded by her smart doorbell camera on the night of my wedding.

While the camera angle didn't capture the interior of the bedroom, its high-sensitivity microphone had clearly recorded the raised voices drifting through the open window.

Nathan played the audio file for me in his office.

The recording was painfully clear. Daniel's slurred voice echoed off the speakers: "You made me hit you, Rebecca! You know how my mother gets!"

Followed immediately by Judith’s cold response: "Maybe now she’ll understand how a proper wife behaves."

Listening to those words made my skin turn cold.

"You made me hit you."

It was the universal anthem of a coward refusing to take responsibility for his own violence.

An hour later, Daniel's divorce attorney called Nathan with a proposition. Daniel would agree to an uncontested dissolution of the marriage if I withdrew the police report and signed a non-disclosure agreement promising never to speak publicly about the Mercers.

"Tell your client," I instructed Nathan, "that I do not sign contracts with abusers."

When Daniel received my refusal, he attempted to call my cell phone seventeen times in two hours. I ignored every ring.

Finally, he left a frantic voicemail:

"Rebecca, pick up! Whatever game you're playing, stop it right now! HelixPoint's funding is frozen because of some governance audit, and people's jobs are on the line! You need to drop these ridiculous charges!"

He never once asked if the bruise on my face had faded.
