Chapter 20 - The Shadow on the Wall

|
Three months after the divorce was finalized, Stonebridge Meridian Partners announced its expansion into European renewable energy markets, securing a landmark three-billion-dollar acquisition.
I sat in my corner suite on the top floor of our corporate tower, watching the afternoon sun cast golden light across my desk. My life had regained its pace, rhythm, and strength.
A knock sounded at my door, and my executive assistant stepped inside carrying a small, unlabelled black box.
"Ms. Lane," she said, setting the box on my desk. "This was delivered to the front desk by a private courier. There was no return address or courier log."
I frowned slightly. "Did security scan it?"
"Yes, ma'am. It cleared all metallic and chemical screening."
I picked up a silver letter opener and sliced through the black tape sealing the box.
Inside lay a single photograph and a handwritten note on heavy cardstock.
I pulled out the photograph first. It was a clear, candid shot of me taken earlier that morning, showing me sitting by the window of a private coffee shop near my penthouse.
My heart gave a brief, familiar thud, but my hands remained entirely steady.
I flipped the card over to read the handwritten message written in dark ink:
Daniel Mercer was merely a pawn in a much larger game, Ms. Lane. HelixPoint was never his company—it belonged to us. And now that you've destroyed our subsidiary, Stonebridge owes us ninety million dollars.
We will be in touch soon.
I stared at the double-headed eagle watermark stamped at the bottom of the card—the signature mark of the Vantage Global Group, one of the most ruthless offshore investment conglomerates in the world.
A slow, cold smile spread across my face.
I set the photograph down, picked up my desk phone, and dialed Nathan Cole and head of corporate security.

"Nathan," I said, my voice echoing with quiet, unshakeable power. "Assemble the board and call security. Someone else thinks they can play games with Stonebridge."
I looked out the window at the endless horizon, standing ready for whatever war was coming next.
