Chapter 6 - Taking What Is Mine

|
At ten o'clock the following morning, a commercial moving truck pulled up outside the Mercer family home.
I stepped out of my sedan wearing tailored trousers, dark sunglasses, and a trench coat. Beside me stood Nathan Cole, holding a thick leather briefcase, accompanied by two licensed inventory specialists.
I opened the front door using my key. Inside, Judith was sitting in the living room wearing a housecoat. She leapt to her feet the moment the movers began carrying out the heavy sectional sofa.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Judith screamed, her voice echoing through the foyer. "You can't just rob us in broad daylight! Police! I'm calling the police!"
Nathan calmly stepped forward and placed a binder on the dining table. "Mrs. Mercer, every item being removed was purchased exclusively by Ms. Lane using her personal funds prior to the marriage. We have credit card statements, serial numbers, and delivery confirmations. Feel free to contact law enforcement if you wish to verify."
Daniel rushed down the stairs, his eyes bloodshot, wearing the same crumpled shirt from the night before.
"Rebecca?" he gasped, staring at the movers carrying out the television I had bought him for Christmas. "You brought a lawyer? How are you paying for all this?"
"She probably found some old wealthy benefactor to fund her little revenge scheme," Judith spat, glaring at me.
Nathan looked at Judith, then at Daniel, but I raised my hand to stop him from replying.
"Don't you have a meeting at Stonebridge Meridian in an hour, Daniel?" I asked mildly.
Daniel straightened his posture, trying to reclaim his arrogance. "As a matter of fact, I do. At eleven-thirty, I’m securing ninety million dollars in funding. When that deal closes, Rebecca, I won't have time for your childish games."
"Money has a way of revealing the truth," I said softly.

"You'll regret leaving me when HelixPoint goes public," he boasted.
I looked down at the pale impression on my ring finger. "I already regret something."
