Chapter 4 - The Penthouse and the Record

For two years, Daniel Mercer and his family believed I was Rebecca Lane—a quiet, thirty-seven-year-old executive assistant who rented a modest one-bedroom apartment and drove an eight-year-old sedan. They believed my parents were dead, which was true, and that I had spent my adult life struggling from one mediocre secretarial job to another.
They were completely wrong.
My legal name was Rebecca Whitmore Lane. I was the chief executive officer and controlling shareholder of Stonebridge Meridian Partners, a private investment firm managing billions in commercial real estate, logistics, and technology. I had rented the small apartment under a shell corporation because I wanted one genuine relationship in my life that wasn't tied to my net worth.
Daniel leaned against the doorframe, mistaking my silence for defeat. "Go ahead," he sneered. "Leave. You'll be back in two days when you realize you can't survive without my income."
"You will hear from my attorney in the morning," I said quietly.
He laughed again. "What attorney can you possibly afford?"
I stepped out into the night air and pulled the door shut between us.
Twelve minutes later, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb. My personal driver, Marcus, stepped out to open the door. The moment he caught sight of the red welt on my cheekbone, his posture straightened.
"Ms. Lane," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Should I call the police department immediately?"
"Not yet, Marcus," I replied, sliding into the leather back seat. "First, take me to the urgent care clinic."
I pulled out my phone and dialed my senior counsel, Nathan Cole.
"Nathan," I said as soon as he answered. "I need you to document a domestic assault, prepare emergency divorce filings, and pull up the pending investment file for HelixPoint Systems."

Nathan was silent for three seconds. "Are you safe, Rebecca?"
"I am safe now," I answered. "And tomorrow morning, Daniel Mercer is going to learn exactly who he married."
