Chapter 8 - The Noise in the Lobby

|
Had Judith Mercer remained quiet, the breakdown of our marriage might have been settled in a private court room. But Judith viewed submission as a duty and public humiliation as her personal weapon.
Forty-eight hours after the wedding, Judith began calling neighbors, claiming I had seduced her son, stolen family heirlooms, and abandoned him because he refused to buy me luxury clothes.
When those rumors failed to yield a response, she decided to confront me directly at my supposed place of employment.
She drove downtown to the modest mid-rise building where I had claimed to work as an executive assistant. She marched through the glass doors, her handbag tucked under her arm, and began shouting in the busy marble lobby.
"I am looking for Rebecca Lane!" Judith bellowed at the front desk. "Tell her that her mother-in-law is here! Tell that gold-digger to come down and explain why she ran away after ruining my son's life!"
The receptionist blinked in confusion. "Ma'am, there is no Rebecca Lane listed in this building directory."
"Don't lie to protect her!" Judith shrieked, drawing the attention of dozens of commuters. "She's an adulteress! A manipulative liar who traps successful men!"
Several bystanders pulled out their smartphones, recording her outburst as security guards stepped forward to intervene.
"Ma'am, you need to lower your voice and leave the premises," the head guard warned.
"I won't leave until that thief faces me!" she screamed as she was escorted through the revolving doors.

What Judith did not realize was that her performance was captured in crystal-clear high definition by the building's security system—and uploaded to social media by three separate observers before noon.
The public unmasking of the Mercer family had officially begun.
