Chapter 6: The Ultimatum

David, clearly annoyed by the emotional display and the delay it was causing, turned his scowl toward the event manager. Mr. Sterling was hurrying over, looking as though he might faint.

"Mr. Harrington, sir, my deepest apologies—" Sterling began, wringing his hands.

David cut him off with a sharp wave of his hand. "I don’t want interruptions during tonight’s program. I am here as a primary sponsor to lend my face to this foundation. I will not have my time wasted by poorly supervised brats."

Sterling swallowed hard. "Of course, sir. It was just a minor accident..."

"Remove them from the ballroom," David ordered coldly, pointing a finger at Sarah and Lily, who were still kneeling on the floor.

A collective gasp quietly rippled through the nearest tables, but still, no one dared to intervene. To anger David Harrington was to invite financial ruin.

Sarah slowly stood up, keeping one protective arm around her daughter. Her demeanor had shifted. The warm, comforting mother was gone, replaced by a woman with a spine of absolute steel. She looked directly into David Harrington's arrogant eyes, her expression eerily calm.

She then looked around the room, making eye contact with the various executives, politicians, and socialites standing in frozen silence.

"Is this really how we treat a child who made no mistake?" Sarah asked quietly, her voice ringing with crystalline clarity. "A grown man walks into a little girl because he is too distracted to look where he is going, and your response is to banish the child to protect his ego?"

David sneered. "I don't care who you are, madam. You are making a scene. Escort them out, Sterling."

"Please, Mrs. Hayes," Sterling whispered, practically begging. "It might be best if you just step out into the hall..."
